"On The Blackout Within The University, My Take" By OBJ

ON THE BLACKOUT WITHIN THE UNIVERSITY, MY TAKE..

BY: OGELEYINBO BODUNRIN JOSEPH (OBJ)

If the news circulating about, that the students union is planning a protest, is actually true, I will doubt the authenticity of Mr PRO's recent broadcast message that a spoilt transformer within the University is the cause of the blackout. I put it to you sir(Mr PRO and other students union executives) that it is highly unnecessary to go on a protest when the students union already know where the problem is from. What you should have done is to ensure immediate solution to the problem which you claimed you have identified (it is not a new thing that the transformer got spoilt and it is also not a big deal to get spoilt transformers fixed as quick as you can facilitate it) except if you have now accepted protests to be the only way of solving all problems within the university.

My assumptions are two..
1)That the NASU strike is the cause of the blackout within the university
2)That the school authority is taking advantage of the NASU strike to deprive students of power supply in order to save cost.

From the two assumptions above, it can be concluded, contrary to your own reason, that either of the two points stated above warrant students to go on protest in that..

In 1)above, students are not supposed to be deprived of electricity (which is the reason for the lack of water). If NASU is the cause, it will only be good if the students union can dialogue with NASU executives and if there is clear evidence that NASU is fighting for the right cause, the students union should show support to NASU members in order to ensure that Justice prevail as quick as possible and power is restored back to the university as soon as possible. And it is important that students stop going to classes like it is happening in some faculties and departments. This is because the present condition in the University (no light no water) is not conducive for learning and also, we don't want a situation where our students will be flogged out of the classroom by NASU members. We will never accept this.

Moreover, from (2)above, students have every right to protest if after proper and efficient consultation and consolidation, it is established that option (2)above is correct. This is because the school authority at no time have any right to deprive students what can readily be made available to us.

At this juncture, I will advice that the students union come out straight and open to us so that we will be able to know what we are fighting for and we will be able to stand for what we are fighting for.
Most importantly, every student needs to be carried along at this period (information is vital and it must be reliable).
